Why Audi collision damage
goes past the panel
Audi collision damage often continues under the panel. Here is what is down there, and what we do about it.
What the body is made of
- Many Audi bodies mix aluminum panels with high-strength steel structure.
- Aluminum work-hardens as it deforms. It cracks where steel would stretch back, so the same dent is not the same repair.
- Bumper covers and glass carry sensors and cameras, and manufacturer repair procedures call for recalibration once those parts are replaced.
What we do about it
- Aluminum body work.
- Structural damage measured and documented before the repair plan is set.
- Sensor and driver-assist recalibration after the repair.
- Genuine Audi parts ordered for the repair.
- Paint matched from the code on the car.

Audi collision repair questions
Is an aluminum panel on an Audi repairable, or does it get replaced?
It depends on where the damage sits and how far the metal moved. Aluminum work-hardens as it deforms, so it cracks where steel would stretch back, and a crease that would pull out of a steel fender may not come out of an aluminum one. We do aluminum body work. The call between repair and replacement is made after we see the panel, and it goes into the written estimate either way.
What counts as structural damage on an Audi?
Damage that reached past the bolt-on panels into the parts of the body that hold the car together: rails, mounts, pillars, floor. It does not always show from the outside, and a bumper cover that hangs straight says very little about what is behind it. Structure is measured and documented before a repair plan is set rather than judged by eye.
What happens if teardown finds more damage than the estimate?
It gets documented before the repair goes any further. Audi damage can carry on into brackets, rails, mounts and the sensors behind a bumper cover. When teardown reveals more, we photograph it, write it up, and file a supplement with your adjuster so the repair follows the damage rather than the first estimate. See what a supplement is.
Can you use genuine Audi parts?
Yes, we can order genuine Audi parts. On an insurance claim your policy governs what is covered, so you can ask for genuine parts and we go through the options with you at the estimate, before you approve the repair plan.
My insurer suggested one of their shops. Can I still bring my Audi here?
Yes. In California the choice of repair shop is yours, and it does not change your coverage or your deductible. Name this shop when the insurer asks where the car goes, and we pick up the damage documentation and the adjuster calls from there. See how the claim process works.
Can you estimate Audi damage from photos?
Yes, as a starting point. Attach photos to the estimate form on this page and we come back with an initial assessment. The scope is confirmed in person, because damage on an aluminum body often continues past what a photo can show.
